WB approves $800 million loan for Amaravati
Why in the news?
The World Bank has given the green light to fund the development of Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh’s new capital city. The USD 800 million loan, approved in Washington, will help establish Amaravati as a major economic centre in the state.
Key Points:
“The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors yesterday approved the USD 800 million Amaravati Integrated Urban Development Program aimed at establishing the city as a well-managed, climate-resilient growth center in Andhra Pradesh that generates jobs and improves the lives of its current and future residents, especially the most vulnerable,”.
India requested this funding to transform Amaravati into a modern city that creates jobs and improves living conditions for all residents, particularly those most in need. 
The loan comes with favourable terms: it has a 29-year repayment period and a six-year grace period. India has chosen to take the loan in Japanese Yen.
Auguste Tano Kouame, World Bank’s Country Director for India, emphasised that this project aligns with India’s urban development goals. With the country’s urban population expected to reach 950 million by 2050, Amaravati could serve as a model for building sustainable cities. 
Amaravati Masterplan:
They pointed out that the Amaravati Masterplan reserved 22% of the residential area for affordable housing and the AIUDP would support this including bysetting up a fund that can pool in private sector resources.
The WB would leverage international knowledge in sustainable urban design to build the city’s trunk infrastructure, including a road grid, public transport, and flood-mitigation and water/wastewater systems.
The loan has a final maturity of 29 years, including a six-year grace period. It is payable in Japanese Yen.
The AIUDP has been developed based on consultations with a range of stakeholders, including local communities, as well as lessons from the WB’s engagement in the urban sector globally and in India.
