Legacy of Indian Army Day
Indian Army Day is observed every year on January 15 to honour the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers who have dedicated their lives to the protection of the nation. The day marks the historic event of General K M Cariappa assuming command of the Indian Army in 1949, becoming the first Indian Commander-in-Chief after the departure of General Sir F R R Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief. Key Highlights of the 77th Army Day Theme for 2025: ‘Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena’ (Capable India, Empowered Army), showcasing the Indian Army’s dedication to strengthening national security and defence capabilities. For the first time, the all-women Agniveer contingent participated in the Army Day parade, marking a significant milestone in gender inclusion in the armed forces. Pune hosted the Army Day parade for the first time, reflecting the Union government’s effort to hold national events outside the capital. This is the third instance of the parade being held outside New Delhi. |
